  • Education Program:
Backtrack is passionate about music and the performing arts. We were all lucky enough to have arts education in our schools, and we understand how enriching these programs are for students. We are inspired by the power of the human voice and want to celebrate this gift with others and help them find and develop their own voices. We've performed at over 100 schools and have received positive feedback from many teachers and administrators who often compliment our ability to relate to and communicate with the students. We've also heard wonderful stories about the lasting effects of our visits such as students taking the initiative to start their own a cappella groups, reserved students coming out of their shells when singing (and/or beatboxing!) and students deciding to enroll in their choirs. These stories are humbling and encourage us to continue providing quality educational programming.
    --Assembly ♪
Our assembly show is the foundation of our programming. We sing a variety of music, including pop hits, oldies and originals. In addition to singing, we can include an a cappella arranging demonstration, beatbox tutorial, Q&A section and other fun, interactive bits!
    --Workshop ♪
We workshop with choirs, focusing on both musical and performance elements. We can workshop repertoire the students are currently working on and/or we can provide a complimentary Backtrack arrangement for them to learn prior to our visit.
    --Clinics ♪
Beatboxing - Our award-winning beatboxer, Johnny Buffalo, gives a crash course on beatboxing. He teaches the basic sounds of beatboxing, incorporates the sounds into beats and gets students up on the microphone to try out their beats. Time permitting, the clinic culminates in a beatbox battle where the students are split into different teams.

Choreography - We discuss elements for successful choreography such as directed energy, stillness and call and response. Students are taught a chorus of a song and broken up into small groups to choreograph/block the song. The groups perform and receive feedback. Time and technology permitting, Backtrack members share video examples and discuss the elements that make for strong stage presence (as a group and individually).

Group Vocal Improvisation - This is a simple and fun introduction to a cappella arranging and also teaches students about the importance of listening, going with their musical instincts and not being afraid to put themselves out there. The clinic involves teaching and playing a series of games where small groups of students create vocal arrangements on the spot.

Singing a Solo - Backtrack conducts this clinic with the hopes of helping students gain confidence when auditioning and performing solos. We discuss elements that make a successful solo, such as singing with intention, and share tips to help with nerves. Students sing a verse and a chorus of a song and receive feedback. Time and technology permitting, we show video clips of "successful" solos.

DIY Music Video - We discuss the process we use for creating music videos. We discuss the equipment necessary (sometimes just an iPhone will suffice) and the planning and execution steps. Using Backtrack videos as examples, we discuss different structures for music videos including narrative-driven videos, green screen videos and behind-the-scenes videos.

Acting A Song - In this class, we discuss the elements that make for a successful musical theatre performance. Students will perform a verse and chorus of their favorite MT selection and workshop the song with the goal of crafting a polished 32 bar audition cut. Students will be given tools to delve into a character’s point of view, turn lyrics into action & find comfortability on the stage. and more!

The Singers

Mallory Moser

Mallory got the performing bug at a very young age when she began training at an NYC hole-in-the-wall theater called New Media Repertory. She went on to pursue the arts more seriously throughout middle and high school in Fort Worth, TX where, as a senior, she won the Betty Buckley Best Actress award for her role as Katharine in Kiss Me Kate. She received her B. A. in Theatre with both musical theatre and marketing concentrations at Northwestern University, where she performed in numerous musicals and plays, directed a site-specific production, and served as a four-year member and Show Producer for X-Factors A Cappella. Post college, Mallory completed the highly selective 9-month professional training program at Actors Theatre of Louisville during its 14/15 season and has performed in several NYC new play readings and workshops. She enjoys teaching in various settings; with Backtrack and beyond, Mallory has worked with aspiring artists of all ages on topics ranging from voice technique and acting to auditioning and musical improvisation.  She also produces much of the online content for Backtrack and enjoys collaborating with other artists on various film projects as well as learning new techniques in all things film production. Mallory is a passionate foodie always down for a new restaurant, a theatre nerd who will never turn down a ticket to a show on or off (or off-off!) broadway, and a proud 1 on the enneagram.

Melissa Jordano

Melissa has been singing a cappella since high school, where she sang with Ridge High School’s award-winning A Cappella Choir in Basking Ridge, New Jersey. During this time, she had the opportunity to sing at Carnegie Hall and served as Soprano I Section Leader. She continued singing a cappella in college, where she sang with Johns Hopkins University’s premiere a cappella group, Octopodes. With the group, Melissa appeared multiple times at the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA) semi-final rounds. In 2014, her original song, "Kill the Lights," was runner-up for the Contemporary A Cappella Recording (CARA) award for Best Original by a Scholastic Group and was featured on the compilation, "Sing 11: One Louder," produced by the Contemporary A Cappella Society of America (CASA). Since joining Backtrack in 2015, Melissa has continued to write songs including the group’s first original, “Love Me Sweetly.” She also arranges music for the group, and she looks forward to continuing to hone her songwriting skills and expressing herself through music. When she is not traveling with Backtrack, Melissa enjoys spending time with her husband and two cats, Arnold and Molly.

Mike Hinkle

Mike first became intrigued with the entertainment world at the age of 11 performing in community theatre. This led him to Cab Calloway School of the Arts High School where he devoted his studies to musical theatre, drama and vocal performance. There he joined The Jazz Chords, a Festival Disney: Jazz Celebration recognized choir and his love for a cappella music was born. Mike holds a BFA from New York University in Drama, having studied at the Stella Adler Studio and the Lee Strasberg Theatre & Film Institute. During his collegiate years, he was a member of NYU’s original co-ed a cappella group, APC Rhythm, and competed in the Northeast ICCA Semifinals. Since college, Mike has performed in multiple NYC theatre festivals and original musicals, most recently being the Off Broadway run of The Extraordinary Fall of the Four Legged Woman, an a cappella Fringe Encore musical. In his spare time, Mike pretends to be a Prosecco sommelier and watches way too much television.

Jojo Otseidu

Jojo is a bass singer, director and arranger who studied at Ohio State University. Jojo served as Music Director of his school’s elite a cappella group, The Ohio State of Mind, for two years. In 2017, he made history by leading The Ohio State of Mind to the final round of the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). This marked the first appearance ever of a group from Ohio in the final stage of the competition. Jojo was recognized as an “Outstanding Bass” at the 2017 ICCA Finals. The award is rarely given; Avi Kaplan (formerly of Pentatonix) is the only other bass singer to be recognized by the ICCA judges in this category. Jojo has also been recognized with several Outstanding Arrangement Awards at Varsity Vocals competitions and has taught bass singing classes at Contemporary A Cappella Society festivals. He has sung with Disney’s new touring a cappella group, “D Cappella," and with various other groups at venues like 54Below and The Beacon Theatre. Outside of a cappella, Jojo enjoys playing soccer, reading, cooking, exercising and spending time with his friends and family.

Johnny Buffalo

Johnny's career in music started when he picked up the guitar at the age of 14. He performed with bands in high school before attending SUNY Fredonia for classical guitar and sound recording technology. It wasn't until his senior year of college that Johnny learned how to beatbox and quickly became obsessed. He moved to NYC, where he assimilated into a community of beatboxers, which helped shape who he is today. Since then, Johnny has worked with non-profit arts organizations such as the Hip Hop Re:education Project and Urban Art Beat and has performed at events such as the Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival and the Trinity Hip Hop Festival (where he opened for Talib Kweli). In addition to performing, Johnny has competed in multiple beatboxing competitions. At the American Beatbox Championships in 2015, he placed 2nd in the loop station and 2v2 battles, and placed 3rd in the 2v2 battles in 2016. Johnny won the award for Best Beatbox in the first ever International Championship of A Cappella (ICA Open) while competing with Backtrack at Carnegie Hall in 2017. This summer, Johnny released his first solo EP titled Welcome to Buffalo, which incorporates the performance of live beatbox, guitar, bass and keys with bass heavy electronic music production. Johnny’s acting career was short lived, and both started and ended at age 5 when he played a small roll in the film “Buffalo 66”.

Testimonials & Reviews

"Oh, my gosh, they were so much more than I had expected.....more personality, high energy, great interaction with the audience and such great voices. They were absolutely fantastic!! My 17 year old grandson loved the show as much as the older people in the crowd."

Linda Leyda, Crawford County Community Concerts Association, Bucyrus, OH

"Backtrack is fabulous. Starting with the initial arrangements, through song selection and the performance, Backtrack was professional, responsive, easy to work with and exceeded our expectations. Performing at a 420 plus person gala, they treated us to a crowd pleasing mashup of New York themed songs and pop cover songs. The performance was fresh and infectious."

Grace Fallek, Avenue of Americas Association, New York, NY

Backtrack knocked it out of the park! They even stayed a little longer at the reception because everyone just didn’t want to leave. We were very proud to present them and look forward to having them back very soon.”

Layne Thompson-Payne, Executive Director, Riverside Arts, Jacksonville, FL

"Backtrack Vocals came to Fieldston Lower today and totally captivated our community. The children were held in rapt attention as they created a beautiful soundscape with their arrangements. Beyond being a professional performing ensemble, they took the time to educate our students how they create their sound, and invited children to the stage to join them in beat boxing and singing along with a song that they (rightfully guessed) was well known by most of their audience. They kept the mood upbeat but also took a chance with a thoughtful and quiet ballad which showed just how much the audience was engaged. Overall, we were thrilled with the sound and energy our students felt throughout the performance. We look forward to having them back again."
